A hostage siege is underway after a knifeman stormed a petrol station, forcing staff to lock themselves in a safe room.

Armed cops swooped on the petrol station with police trying to reason with the man at the scene of the dramatic incident in Hengrove Way, Bristol.

Avon and Somerset Police said a specialist negotiator has been deployed.

The force said one person has been taking to hospital with injuries “not believed to be life-threatening”.

The holed-up members who fled to the safe room are in contact with the police. Locals have been advised to avoid the area.

A police statement said: “Police are at the scene of an incident which has led to the closure of Hengrove Way, Bristol today, Thursday 9 September.

“A man armed with a knife is inside the shop of the petrol station. Staff members are uninjured within a safe room and in contact with officers.

“One person has left the scene and gone to the hospital with injuries not believed life-threatening.

“Armed officers and a negotiator have been deployed to try to bring the incident to a safe conclusion. Members of the public are urged to avoid the area.”
