A large crash happened at the start of the Tour de France caused by a fan.
Idiot Spectator causes Tour de France Pile up. Police are currently searching for them and race organisers said they will be suing them. The incident happened on Stage 1 of the race on Saturday. The female fan, who stood at the side of the road, was seen by cameras holding a large cardboard sign saying hello to her grandparents.
She had her back to oncoming bicycles and was grinning at the television cameras. Riders that were not involved in the incident slowed up so that other could catch up for the final hillclimb of the day. Tour organisers are set to pursue legal action against the fan, who reportedly fled the scene and is still yet to be found.
French authorities are currently investigating the action. When found the spectator will be charged with “unintentional short-term injury through a manifestly deliberate breach of a duty of safety or care” the police stated.
Tour deputy director Pierre-Yves Thouault said “We are suing this woman who behaved so badly. We are doing this so that the tiny minority of people who do this don’t spoil the show for everyone.” After Saturday’s crash an official statement from the Tour read “We’re glad to have the public on the side of the road on the #TDF2021. But for the Tour to be a success, respect the safety of the riders! Don’t risk everything for a photo or to get on television!”
