Prime Minister Boris Johnson could be in power longer than Margaret Thatcher.
Could Boris outdo Thatcher?. Officials said that Johnson was strong in local election polls. According to reports Conservative ministers said that he could well be in power for more than eleven years. Thatcher was the country’s PM from 1979 to 1990.
The report came after the party took the by-election in Hartlepool, a Labour stronghold for many years. They also managed to take control of local councils in Dudley, Nuneaton, Harlow and Northumberland.
The report added that with obvious growing confidence in the Conservatives and a downshift for Labour Johnson could remain in power for many years to come. One minister said “It seems to me to be more than just a short-term rejection of Labour.
It looks fairly permanent” while another added “Labour haven’t represented working-class patriotic voters for a while. They’re too woke, too Islington metropolitan elite. They’re becoming a London party. Boris is a unique politician.
If he wants he could do what Thatcher did and then some.” Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labout party, has vowed to do “whatever it takes” to rebuild the party after it’s shock defeat in Hartlepool.
He said that they need to stop “arguing amongst themselves” and get on with the job. Determined to sort out the problems Starmer said “I’m bitterly disappointed in the result and I take full responsibility for the results – and I will take full responsibility for fixing this.
We have changed as a party but we haven’t set out a strong enough case to the country. I intend to do whatever is necessary to fix that.”
