A national record has been broken by a public sector worker.
Italian man manages to skip work for 15 years. The man, a hospital employee, managed to skip work for 15 years.
Although he hadn’t gone to work at Pugliese Ciaccio hospital in the Calabrian city of Catanzaro since 2005 he was still paid a salary every month totaling £464,000.
Absenteeism is well known in the Italian public sector. The workshy man, now 67, is being charged with abuse of office, forgery and aggravated extortion.
Six managers are also under investigation for helping him skip work.
A police investigation collected evidence against the man.
It is alleged that in 2005 he threatened a hospital director after she discovered what he was up to. However, police said that she then retired and his absenteeism continued as her successor never checked his attendance record.
Government tightened the law in 2016 after several police investigations showed what was going on. In one case a traffic police officer who lived in the same building he worked in was filmed clocking on in his underwear before going back to bed.
