A ‘mask free’ shopping trip has been staged by protesters in Essex.
‘Mask free’ shoppers stage protest at Essex Tesco: Video doing the rounds on social media show the shoppers on a ‘face covering free shop’. The protest took place at Tesco in Chelmsford. Government law currently states that masks must be worn in shops and on public transport. The well organised protest was against the enforcement of having to wear a mask.
In a statement Tesco confirmed that they called the police on Saturday to ‘have a word’ with the maskless shoppers. According to staff all the shoppers told them they were exempt from wearing them. Tesco said that while staff ask people to wear masks they will not enforce it if they feel in danger.
The Department of Health and Social Care made no comment on the protest but did however point out that masks are “largely intended to protect others, not the wearer, against the spread of infection because they cover the nose and mouth, which are the main confirmed sources of transmission”.
