South Devon Care home workers arrested over multiple deaths

Two staff members from a South Devon care home have been arrested.

South Devon Care home workers arrested over multiple deaths: It is in connection with an outbreak of COVID that caused multiple deaths. Currently, Nine residents have passed away at the Holmesley Care Home in Sidford since 25th February. It appears, all the deaths appear to be COVID related. The arrests of a 57-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man were made under the Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015.

Devon and Cornwall police said they were arrested on suspicion of wilful neglect. The force confirmed that both suspects worked at the home. And that no other arrests are planned in connection with the investigation. Additionally, Chief Superintendent Dan Evans said. “I’ve no doubt there will be concern in the community regarding this incident. And we are doing everything possible to help those bereaved families. Also, whilst also working with partners, we will communicate with those with relatives remaining within the home.

At this time, this is a complex investigation involving ourselves and multi-agency partners. With safeguarding of residents at its core. There is significant work under way to understand the current situation. Also to progress the investigation as quickly as possible, while maintaining the safety of care home residents, staff, police officers and partner agency staff.”

Along with the nine deaths, all of which were positive for the disease, another ten people have been treated at Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital, with one staff member being hospitalised with coronavirus.

Earlier, In a statement from Holmesley Care Homes a spokesperson said. “I can confirm that we are currently dealing with an outbreak of coronavirus in the home. And that sadly, five residents have passed away from the virus.

Obviously, They will be deeply missed and our thoughts are with their loved ones at this challenging time. The vast majority of our residents and our staff team have received their first dose of the vaccine. And we hope this may have helped prevent an even worse situation.” The care home said that it is devastated by the outbreak there.
