The EU approved a “one-shot” vaccine from makers Johnson & Johnson on Thursday.
EU approves “one-dose” vaccine from Johnson & Johnson: It now has four fully licensed vaccines to help stop the spread of coronavirus. Taking to social media Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, said. “More safe and effective vaccines are coming to the market. We have just authorised the use of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine in the EU. Following EMA positive review.”
The vaccine has the added benefit of only requiring a single dose. And can be stored in most standard refrigerators at temperatures of 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. (or roughly 36 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit). Thus making it easier and cheaper to transport and store.
Following a thorough review of the data from the new vaccine for efficacy, quality and safety, the medicines evaluator said it would be authorised. Emer Cooke, executive director of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), said. “With this latest positive opinion, authorities across the European Union will have another option to combat the pandemic. And additionally protect the lives and health of their citizens.”
Now, It is reported the first doses of the new vaccine will arrive in European countries by April. Stella Kyriakides, the EU’s health commissioner, said it is “another key step towards ensuring that all citizens can access safe and effective vaccinations as soon as possible”.
