COVID cases down by nearly a third in one week

As the vaccine rollout continues, cases of COVID have dropped by almost a third in a week.

COVID cases down by nearly a third in one week: Matt Hancock, Health Secretary, said on Monday that it was a “sign that the vaccine is working”. However, despite vaccine rollouts across the whole of Europe, the WHO have warned countries to keep going with public health measures as cases are still rising in some areas.

England’s deputy chief science officer, Jonathan Van-Tam, warned that in one in five areas cases are still on the up. Between 24 February and 2 March, 53,761 people had a confirmed positive test result, showing a decrease of 29.4% compared to the previous seven days. Below is a list of the UK’s top ten virus hotspots this week. It shows new cases per 100,000 people up to the week ending 2nd March.

  • 10. Bury 190.6
Latest data released on Friday shows infections have dropped to less than half the amount at the start of the year when all four nations were locked down.
