An Austrian village has been sealed off for a week after a COVID outbreak.
Austrian village sealed off after COVID outbreak: Officials discovered 29 cases of the South African variant in the village. Mayrhofen in Zillertal are attempting to stop the spread by only allowing commuters in or out for a week. In total 42 cases have been diagnosed in the village. It only has a population of 4,000 people. It is situated in the Tyrol area, thought be be the area where the virus first took hold last year.
Thousands of tourists contracted COVID there arfter visiting and returned to their home countries. All residents will be given two tests in the week of lockdown to try and stop a further outbreak. The Tyrol region sent out 40,000 test kits, however only 4,000 have been completed. Total COVID deaths in Austria stand at 8,470, with the Tyrol region seeing 567 deaths out of 47,168 cases.
