The UK’s coronavirus death toll has passed 80,000, while more than 3million cases have been confirmed since the start of the pandemic.
Infections are now well higher than the initial first-wave peak in April, with 50% more Covid patients in many NHS hospitals. Today the Department of Health confirmed another 59,937 daily cases, bringing the total number of infections to 3,017,409. A further 1,035 people have lost their lives within 28 days of testing positive, bringing the Government’s official death toll to 80,868. It marked the fourth day in a row with more than 1,000 fatalities confirmed.
