At least another 316 have died with coronavirus in the UK, while a further 30,501 cases were also reported.
It comes after hundreds of people died on Christmas day and as millions of more people in England were plunged into tier four on Boxing Day.
However, data from the last 24 hours does not include cases or deaths from Northern Ireland today, or deaths in Scotland.
This means the figures are likely to be revised and will be higher.
Data on Bank Holidays also tend to be lower because of a lag in reporting during a holiday period.
The figures that are available take the total number of deaths since the pandemic began to 70,752 and confirmed cases to 2,228,345.
Wales has reported further 4,142 cases, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 139,642. Public Health Wales recorded another 70 deaths, taking the country’s tally since the start of the pandemic to 3,368. Officials said the data was for a 48-hour period from 9 am on Christmas Eve to 9 am on Boxing Day.
