All of Wales will be placed under a full lockdown from midnight tonight. As a new mutant strain of coronavirus spreads through the UK.
Wales Tier 4 lockdown from MIDNIGHT: Plans to allow households to celebrate together for festive period will be cut back to just Christmas Day itself in a bid to limit infections. Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford said:
‘While we all want to avoid further disruption to businesses and plans for Christmas, our overriding duty is to protect lives here in Wales. ‘We know that 2021 will be a different and a better year. Our economy will recover. Christmas will come again.
A nationwide lockdown was originally meant to come into force in Wales from December 28. But has been brought forward. Drakeford said the pattern of transmission in London and the South East of England, linked to the new variant of coronavirus, is ‘remarkably consistent with the rapid acceleration of transmission in Wales’ in recent weeks.
He said the latest evidence suggested that the new strain is present ‘throughout Wales’. And said this required an ‘immediate response’. The Welsh Government’s Cabinet met earlier today to discuss the ‘worrying new development in the pandemic’. As well as advice from senior medical and scientific advisers, including the impact on NHS Wales. He added: ‘The situation is incredibly serious. I cannot overstate this. ‘We have therefore reached the difficult decision to bring forward the Alert Level 4 restrictions for Wales. In line with the action being taken in London and the South East of England. ‘These new restrictions will come into effect from midnight tonight instead of during the Christmas period.’
