A judge has said that “serious cruelty” played a part in the death of a 4-week-old baby girl. By a couple that were in a “toxic” relationship.
“Evil couple” jailed over their 4-week-old baby’s death: Clare Sanders, a 44-year-old management consultant in the City of London, has denied causing baby Eva’s injuries. And also not seeing signs of her mistreatment. Jurors at the Old Bailey previously heard that baby Eva had suffered 27 fractured rib injuries. Along with injuries to her head and spine from 3 individual “brutal assaults.”
Sander’s lover, Tomas Vaitkevicius who is 45 and a handyman, was on trial with her. And both were convicted of causing the death of the child although they were cleared of murder. Sanders, who was handed an 8 year prison sentence, wept in the Old Bailey as the verdict was announced and her lover was sentenced to 9 years.
The judge, Mark Lucraft QC, said that drink played a “major part” in the attacks on the child and went on to say. “Eva was in the midst of your toxic relationship. I am entirely satisfied on all the evidence there were at least three incidents of significant trauma to Eva. And it would have been obvious to each of you she suffered trauma yet you did nothing about it. I’m entirely satisfied there were incidents of serious cruelty and very significant force was used.”
Prosecutor Tom Little QC said during the trial that. “This was, we say, a brutal series of assaults. A defenseless baby was not able to talk, not able to say what happened, not able to defend herself.”
The court heard that on 27 August 2017, days before Eva’s death, Sanders searched the internet on her phone for. “shaken baby syndrome NHS”, “shaking babies” and “baby is shaking”.
A neighbour of Sanders was awoken early on the morning of 1st September 2017 by Sanders screaming and ringing the doorbell and alerted police. Eva was taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting, South London, but died the next day.
