The vaccine to fight against COVID-19 has been administered for the first time outside clinical trials in a historical leap forward in the war against the pandemic.
History made as first patient in the world gets COVID-19 vaccine in UK outside clinical trials: Margaret Keenan, 90-year-old grandmother of four, had the honour of becoming the first patient in the world to receive the vaccine as part of a worldwide program. The jab was given by nurse May Parsons at the Coventry University Hospital at 6.31am Monday morning to Mrs Keenan, who has lived in Coventry for 60 years but originally hails from Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. She she she felt “very privileged” to be the first to get vaccinated and is “incredibly happy” that she will now be able to spend time with family over the festive season after being on her own for most of the year.
She went on to say “My advice to anyone offered the vaccine is to take it – if I can have it at 90 then you can have it too!” Incredibly Mrs Keenan only retired four years ago from her position working in a jewellers and will have a booster jab in 3 weeks time to ensure she is fully inoculated against the virus.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said in an interview with Sky News that “It has been such a tough year for so many people and finally we have our way through it – our light at the end of the tunnel.
And just watching Margaret there – it seems so simple having a jab in your arm, but that will protect Margaret and it will protect the people around her. And if we manage to do that in what is going to be one of the biggest programmes in NHS history, if we manage to do that for everybody who is vulnerable to this disease, then we can move on.” Nurse Parsons said it was a “huge honour” to be the first to administer the vaccine and added “The last few months have been tough for all of us working in the NHS, but now it feels like there is light at the end of the tunnel.” Originally from the Phillipines nurse Parsons has worked for the NHS for the past 24 years and been at Coventry Univerity Hospital since 2003.
