Suspect arrested in connection with Wisconsin shootings

A grandmother has been accused of drowning her baby grandson in the to avoid being shamed as he was “born out of wedlock”.

Beant Dhillon, 44, has been charged with first-degree murder as prosecutors allege she killed her 15-year-old daughter’s newborn child in November 2018.

Dhillon, of California, US, appeared in court this week where she tearfully testified that she thought her daughter was taking her own life when she locked herself in the family’s bathroom.

It was only after the baby’s father opened the door that the new grandmother realise her daughter had been pregnant.

State prosecutors have accused Dillon, along with her cousin and her since-deceased husband, of burying the infant in the back garden of their home, Crime Online reported.

The grandmother allegedly killed her grandson to shield the family from the shame they would receive in the local Sikh community as he was born out of wedlock.

Police said Dhillon previously confessed to murdering the baby by drowning him in a bathtub – but she claimed she gave a false confession at trial.

Defence attorneys argued Monday that the baby died shortly after birth due to a lack of prenatal care, alleging that the child bled to death due to complications with the umbilical cord.

Dhillon’s daughter, who was 15-years-old at the time of the birth, testified last week that she had hid her pregnancy from her family.

She claimed that soon after she had given birth in the bathroom that somebody took her son and later told her they had been adopted.

The daughter said she learned her son was dead when her father, Jagsir Singh, threatened to kill her during an argument.

Singh allegedly pointed towards the backyard and revealed the newborn was buried there.

The daughter alerted police following the argument and authorities arrested Dhillon after Singh found the newborn’s body in a 2-foot grave.

Singh was charged with being an accessory to murder and killed himself in December 2019, according to reports.

The trial continues.
