A wedding held in Ohio, US, and attended by 83 guests has become a “superspreader” incident. With more than half the guests contracting COVID-19.
Bride and groom infected with coronavirus: The event resulted in 32 attendees becoming infected, including the bride and groom, Anthony and Mikayla Bishop. Along with 3 of their grandparents, with 2 needing emergency care. During an interview with a local news channel, WLWT, the couple said that they had taken preventative measures for their big day. Including face masks and hand sanitizer being available to all the guests.
They had also decided to whittle down the numbers attending from an original 200 people. However they said only a few people took up the offer of the measures, even during close contact dancing at the reception. Mikayla said during the interview that “I didn’t think that almost half of our wedding guests were gonna’ get sick. You’re in the moment. You’re having fun. You don’t think about COVID anymore.”
Mikayla went on to say that her symptoms started on her honeymoon in North Carolina. The honeymoon was cut short after they received news that their grandparents were unwell.
