Man & Woman Confirmed Dead After Being Swept To Sea In Cornwall

A man and woman are now confirmed to have died after being swept into the sea at Mullion Cove last night.

Police have now released an update to say that a woman in her 20s and a man in his 40s were airlifted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, but were later confirmed to have died.

They are believed to have been on holiday in the area, from elsewhere in the westcountry.

A police spokesperson said: “Police were called by the coastguard at 7.15pm last night to Mullion Cove, Helston, following reports of that two people had been swept into the sea from the harbour wall.

“Ambulance, police, HM Coastguard and their helicopter attended the scene.

“Sadly, they were both later confirmed deceased. Their next of kin have been informed.

“The deaths are not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner in due course.”

A 999 call was first received at around 6.45pm on Monday, to say that the pair had been swept from the harbour wall.

A rescue was launched involving the coastguard helicopter, two lifeboats and Mullion Coastguard Rescue Team.

A Coastguard spokesperson said at the time: “HM Coastguard has been coordinating the response after a report was received of two people being swept into the sea at Mullion Cove, Cornwall.

“The call came in around 6.45pm today (November 2) that the two had been swept off the harbour wall into the water.

“Following the call, HM Coastguard’s helicopter from Newquay, RNLI lifeboats from Penlee and the Lizard, along with Mullion Coastguard Rescue Teams were all sent.

“Two people were winched from the water and taken to Treliske Hospital (Royal Cornwall Hospital).

“We have no further information.”

Cornwall has been experiencing very large waves over the past week.

Last Wednesday a family of six had to be rescued from Godrevy Point near Gwithian after being knocked from rocks by a large wave.  Global247News Twitter
