A woman has been jailed after stabbing her flatmate more than 30 times in a “horrific” attack just two days before she was due to be deported from the country.
Awa Zongo, 29, also poured boiling water over her victim, who was left with a knife sticking out of her neck, at the house they shared in Wigan, Greater Manchester, last December.
A court was told during the hearing that the frenzied attack happened just two days before Zongo was being deported. After pleading guilty to assault at Manchester Crown Court she was jailed for life with a minimum of 7 years to be served.
The court were told that police were called to the property on 14th December last year after receiving reports of a disturbance. When they arrived they found paramedics treating a woman in her 40’s for a knife wound to the neck. Zongo stumbled from the house and collapsed on the ground pretending to faint.
She was accompanied by officers to hospital where is was discovered she only had superficial injuries. The victim had to undergo an operation to remove the knfe from her neck and also had more than 30 cuts to her abdomen, thighs and neck. She also suffered burns to her shoulder, arm, back and face from the attack with the boiling water. Zongo was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and charged with the offence, but the prosecution accepted a guilty plea to assault.
Detective Constable Danny Ritchie spoke after the hearing to say “The victim in this barbarous attack is incredibly lucky to be alive. Thankfully, the serious wound that she sustained wasn’t fatal and I hope that she can feel a sense of closure after today’s verdict. My thoughts are with the victim as she continues to physically and mentally recover from this truly terrifying ordeal which has deeply affected her. Although she will never be able to forget what happened, we hope the fact that her attacker faces a spell behind bars will provide her with some comfort and enable her to move on with her life.”
