The decision to include a puppet of Greta Thunberg has been defended by the makers of Spitting Image.
Greta Thunberg puppet defended by Spitting Image: Following an online backlash at the program. In it’s heyday the satirical show, depicting caricatured and distorted puppets, was watched by 15 million viewers. The program is mainly directed at political and pop culture figures.
However, after the puppet of Thunberg was unveiled, people took to social media. Saying that it was inappropriate to mock the 17-year-old Swedish climate activist who has autism. In response, group director of streaming for ITV, Reemah Sakaan, said. “it is a straightforward joke and nothing to do with her as an individual”.
Also, other puppets to be featured in the 10 week series are: Boris Johnson, Donald Trump, Kim Kardashian, Adele, Meghan Markle, Elon Musk, Beyonce and James Corden among others.
Afterwards, users of Twitter took to their accounts to criticizing the use of Thunberg’s puppet. Saying that they thought it was “disgusting”. Roger Law, creator of Spitting Image, says that the new series will poke fun at both left and right-wing public figures. Later, when asked if it would only be right-wing he replied “no, that wouldn’t be any fun”.
