The Spanish government will extend the ERTE scheme today until January 2021
Spain will extend the ERTE scheme: The Spanish government will approve today (Tuesday) an extension to Jan 31 of the ERTE scheme. That supports hundreds of thousands of workers through SPAIN’S worst recession on record, government ministers have revealed.
With a new wave of COVID-19 cases smashing the Spanish economy hard, the Spanish ministry has reached an agreement with labour unions to extend the ERTE scheme. But still lacks the support of representatives of businesses, the Global247news source said.
Sources have revealed, the cabinet will pass the extension of the scheme which was due to expire tomorrow.
Millions of workers in Spain have benefited from the ERTE scheme from mid-March. When authorities imposed one of Europe’s strictest lockdowns to curb the novel coronavirus epidemic.
As restrictions were lifted in late June, many returned to their jobs. But as of August, more than 800,000 people were still getting ERTE benefits.
On hearing the news this morning many businesses across Spain were relieved to hear of the pending extension. As thousands of business owners still can’t afford to take workers back to employment.
In Spain’s holiday town of Benalmadena businessman Kevin Johnson shared his relief:
” Thank god for that, I still have 8 employees on the ERTE and I simply can not afford for them to return to work. It looks like till at least next year, now I hope it gets extended again in January. I think March will be the business pick up time,” he said.
