Police in Strasbourg have launched an investigation. After a French woman alleged that she was punched in the face in broad daylight for wearing a skirt.
Woman attacked in Strasbourg for wearing a skirt: The 22-year-old student, known as Elizabeth, said that she was approached by three men in Strasbourg last Friday. Who were complaining that she was wearing a skirt. French government officials are calling the alleged incident “extremely serious”.
Elizabeth said in an interview with a local radio station that the men came up to her and called her a whore as she was wearing a skirt. Two of the men then grabbed her while the third punched her in the face. Leaving her with a black eye.
She said that, although people were about and saw the incident, no one came to help her. She added that she was disgusted by the reaction of people to the attack and getting no help.
Marlene Schiappa, the country’s interior minister, visited Strasbourg on Wednesday. And said that the skirt was not the reason for the attack and Elizabeth even less so. She went on to say “A woman is never hit because she wears a skirt. A woman is hit because there are people who are misogynistic, sexist and violent. And who free themselves from any law and any rule of civility by striking them.”
When you’re a student and you have to think about the outfit you have to wear and the message it sends. Also it’s an overwhelming mental load,” Elizabeth said she was not afraid to carry on going out wearing a skirt. And life is too beautiful to let people defeat us.
