Coronavirus European weekly cases have exceeded the March peak!
Speaking on Thursday, World Health Organisation (WHO) regional director Hans Kluge said 300,000 new infections were reported last week alone.
“We have a very serious situation unfolding before us,” he said.
European countries, including the UK and Spain, have recorded their highest daily tallies in months. The death rate has yet to see a similar increase.
Testing capacity has increased across Europe since the pandemic began, meaning that cases are now more likely to be identified and recorded.
But Mr Kluge said the figures also showed “alarming rates of transmission across the region”.
According to the WHO, there have been five million confirmed cases and more than 228,000 fatalities across Europe since the pandemic began.
