A Slovenian woman has appeared in court and been found guilty of fraud. After cutting off her own hand to try and get the insurance money.
Woman who cut off her hand found guilty of fraud: The district court heard that Julija Adlesic, 22, had plotted the fraudulent insurance claim beforehand. Taking out 5 policies that would of paid out more than 1 million euros (£926,000). With half being paid immediately in a lump sum and the other half in monthly installments.
Later, the court heard that she and her boyfriend had arranged for the “accident” to happen at their home in 2019. Her boyfriend and his father arranged for her left hand to be cut off above the wrist by a circular saw. And then took her to hospital, saying she had done it while sawing tree branches.
They even left the severed hand at home, thinking it would be better for the payout. However, police recovered it and it was able to be re-attached. Adlesic denied the fraud charges. Saying that no-one at her young age wants to be crippled and that her youth had been destroyed.
Police investigating the case found that her boyfriend had searched online just days before the “accident. Looking at how artificial limbs work. Adlesci was sentenced on Friday to 2 years in prison and her boyfriend received 3 years.
His father was also found guilty of abetting and received a 1 year suspended sentence. Judge Marjeta Dvornik said “we believe the sentences are appropriate and fair and will serve their purpose”.
