Serious injuries to children on school bus that collided with a bridge

A double decker bus has crashed into a railway bridge, injuring 3 children who have serious but not life threatening injuries.

Serious injuries to children on school bus: The roof of the bus was sheared off in the accident at Wellhouse Lane, Winchester, Hampshire.

The three children were taken to hospital to be treated and 12 other children have suffered minor injuries.

The accident happened at 8.10am on Thursday as the children were being driven to the Henry Beaumont school in Winchester. Inspector Andy Tester from Hampshire police said that a further 57 children and the driver of the bus were not hurt in the incident.

All the children were aged between 11 and 16. A spokesperson for the Hampshire police said. “a road closure is in place on Well House Lane from the junction with Andover Road North to School Lane. This is to enable us to deal with this incident. We thank you for your patience. We are working in co-operation with the school and Hampshire County Council children’s services. Providing support to the students and their parents”.

One child, who had just got on the bus, Jack Coates, 14, said that the driver was taking a shortcut. As the service was running 10 minutes late. He said that after the accident he was worried about the people on the top deck. And, alighting from the bus, could see children jumping from the upstairs windows and being caught by people who had rushed to help.  Global247News Twitter
