The partner of Mercy Baguma, 34, who was found dead in her flat on the 22nd August with her 16 month old son near to death from starvation has said that it is “a miracle” that their child survived.
Partner of dead mum found next to her starving baby says “it’s a miracle”: It is thought that Baguma died on the Tuesday but her body, and her son, were not found until the Saturday.
Her partner, Eric Nnanna, 30, said that he had called round to her flat on the Saturday and could here his son crying, but there was no answer when he knocked the door.
He immediately alerted the police who arrived, broke in and found Baguma dead in the hallway. Her son, Adriel, could not stand up he was so weak.
Nnanna says that every time he thinks back to that fateful day he cries. He went on to say that when he picked Adriel up all he could feel is his spine and bones and that his babygrow was covered in blood.
The couple had been together for three years and had enjoyed spending time together as a family during lockdown. Due to her asylum status Baguma was not allowed to work but did volunteer in a charity shop.
Nnanna said that money was tight and they would make Adriel’s food from scratch and that Adriel was a very happy baby who would shout “daddy” when he went to see him.
On the day in question the baby didn’t even recognize Nnanna as he was so weak and malnourished. He also said that stories circulating that Baguma had starved to death were totally untrue and that they did receive help from charities and the local church who were always there to help.
