The UK recorded its highest number of new cases since the week to June 3, and the Health Secretary has claimed the Government’s coronavirus testing system is working ‘well’.
UK’s highest coronavirus cases weekly in three months: In the week to August 26th in England, a total of 6,732 new people tested positive for Covid-19. This saw a 6% rise on the previous week.
Mr Hancock told Sky News: ‘At the moment the system works well. Of course there are operational challenges from time to time but it works well.
in addition we’re finding a higher and higher proportion of people in the country who have coronavirus. Equally importantly we are getting them tests so they can be looked after.
‘But absolutely, we need to roll out more testing. We have done this throughout this crisis and today’s another step in solving some of those problems with the existing technology.’
On Thursday it was announced that the government was investing in 20 minute test results. This should assist in tackling the coronavirus.
UK’s highest coronavirus cases to be tackled over winter months
Mr Hancock told BBC Radio 4’s Today program. “Short of a vaccine, this is the best chance we have of reducing social distancing whilst controlling the virus. Especially with winter coming, with all the challenges that brings.”
