Masks to be made mandatory from today in France

Face masks will be compulsory outdoors in Paris from today (Friday August 28th) the French government announced.

“The deterioration of the health situation has led the prefect to take this strong measure in the interest of the population,” the Parisian police prefecture said in a statement.

All pedestrians and cyclists must wear a mask in the Paris city limits and in the three suburbs of the Petite Couronn inner ring.

This area covers a population of around seven million.

Prime Minister Jean Castex said: “The virus is spreading all over the country … The spread of the epidemic could become exponential if we do not react quickly.”

Castex had hinted at mandatory masks earlier in the week and it is now set from today.

Motorists will not have to wear masks, the French police said.

The reproduction “R” number of infections in France has risen to 1.4 aswell as a new record high of daily infections on Wednesday of 5429.

Castex, who became the new PM in July said: ‘Life must go on but France will not let down its guard!’
