Spain could return to Phase 1 lockdown admits government with 'nothing ruled out'

The return to phase 1 could happen due to the alarmingly high amount of new Covid-19 cases occurring all across Spain.

One such area which could return to Phase 1 immediately is Lorca in Murcia.

The medical office in the town was put at ‘red level’ yesterday (August 26th) as was neighbouring Totana which is currently in quarantine.

The medieval city of Lorca, which has over 100,000 residents, has seen 80 cases in one day with 22 currently in intensive care at the Rafael Mendez hospital.

Staff at the hospital have asked for help as the intensive care unit is at full-capacity now.

This has prompted the mayor of Lorca, Diego Jose Mateos, to hold a press conference.

When asked if Lorca, like Totana, could go into lockdown he said: ‘Nothing is being ruled out.’

‘If other measures must be taken, they will be taken,’ Mr Mateos continued.

The President of Murcia, Fernando Miras, has supported mayor Mateos’ claims.

‘We need a human and material intervention,’ he said.

The death toll currently stands at 28,971 since the start of the pandemic.
