Manchester City are preparing to make Lionel Messi an offer in a sensational report.
However, Barcelona’s official stance is that Messi is not for sale and interested parties must activate his €700 million (£632m/$826m) release clause.
If released, it would make Messi the biggest transfer in history ahead of current record holder Neymar who was transferred from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain for €222 million (£198 million) in August of 2017.
Lionel Messi, who is now 33 and is reportedly unhappy at Barcelona especially after the 8-2 thrashing by Bayern Munich last week, has always set his sights on the Premier League as one last challenge.
Messi has won 33 cups with Barcelona including the Champions League four times.
Manchester City have Fifa’s ‘Fair Play’ scheme to abide by in relation to transfers but if there is a way around it to sign Messi they will.
Messi also played under current City coach Pep Guardiola when he was Barcelona coach from 2008 to 2012.
