Celebrity photographer Dean Freeman has returned from Spain due to his former wife admitting she had killed their disabled son
Celebrity photographer Dean Freeman was in Spain as his former wife killed their son and then made a phone call to a friend to confess all an inquest heard today.
The mother accused of murdering her severely disabled son called a friend in the early hours of the morning to say she had killed him, the inquest has heard.
Dylan Freeman, 10, died on August 16 after his airways had been restricted by a sponge, West London Coroner’s Court was told.
It appeared he had been given a sleeping aid and had a sponge placed in his mouth, tied with a strap, the court was informed
His mother and primary carer, Olga Freeman, the 40-year-old wife of celebrity photographer Dean Freeman, appeared at the Old Bailey last week accused of his murder.
Senior coroner Chinyere Inyama, opening the inquest on Tuesday morning, said the mother had recently been prescribed antidepressant tablets.
Mr Inyama said Dylan had autism, Cohen syndrome – which affects many parts of the body – and other issues.
He added: “His mother appeared to be his sole and primary carer, she had recently been put on antidepressants.
“His mother called a friend in the early hours to state to the friend that she killed her son.”
He said the mother and her friend went to Acton police station in west London and told them what had happened.
Police and paramedics went to Dylan’s home in Cumberland Park, Acton, where he was found dead.
The coroner said it appeared he had been administered a sleeping aid and had a sponge placed in his mouth, tied with a strap.
His body was identified four days later by his headteacher.
The preliminary cause of death was given as restriction of the airways.
There was no other evidence of injuries caused by assault or restraint, the coroner said during the eight-minute hearing.
Mr Inyama adjourned the inquest until March 2021, pending the outcome of any legal proceedings.
The mother is due to appear for a plea and trial preparation hearing at the Old Bailey on November 4.
‘Boy laid next to toys’
At a hearing last week, the Old Bailey was told Olga Freeman killed her son by suffocating him.
She allegedly put a sponge in Dylan’s mouth and laid him down next to his toys in the master bedroom of her flat.
The court heard Freeman had struggled to care for Dylan in the six months before his death.
Joel Smith, prosecuting, told the court on August 19: “The cause of death was found to be restriction of the airways.
“Parts of sponge were found within the throat of the deceased.”
Freeman, a Russian national, spoke only to confirm her name and date of birth.
Dylan’s father, celebrity photographer Dean Freeman, last week described his son as “a beautiful, bright, inquisitive and artistic child who loved to travel, visit art galleries and swim”.
Mr Freeman is the son of Robert Freeman, who took pictures for some of The Beatles’ most iconic album covers.
Dean Freeman is best known for his pictures of members of the Spice Girls and David Beckham and has also snapped celebrities such as Bradley Cooper and Emily Ratajkowski.
He said in a statement released last week: “Dylan was a beautiful, bright, inquisitive and artistic child who loved to travel, visit art galleries and swim.
“We travelled extensively over the years together spending such a memorable time in places including Brazil, France and Spain. I can’t begin to comprehend his loss.”
A representative added: “Dean has been touched by the messages of support he’s received from friends and asks that the media respects his and his family’s privacy at this awful time.”
