Manchester United defender Harry Maguire appears in court in Greece

Manchester United captain pleads ‘not guilty’ after leaving Greek court today.

Greek police issued a statement in which he and the two other men, aged 28 and 29, were accused of “violence against officials, disobedience, bodily harm, insult and attempted bribery of an official”.

Maguire denies all the allegations. Under police escort he gave testimony before a state prosecutor on Syros, the administrative centre of the Cyclades chain, having been driven to the courthouse in Ermoupoli, the island’s capital.

A court date for the 27-year-old has been set for Tuesday so Maguire can return to England.

What began as a scuffle inside the bar in Mykonos’s trendy Fabrika district rapidly descended into a brawl outside between Maguire, his friends, rival fans and police who, conducting coronavirus inspections nearby, rushed to the scene.

Maguire says the fight started after someone produced a sharp object and attacked his sister.

In a statement Manchester United said: “Following the appearance in court today we note the adjournment of the case to allow the legal team to consider the case file. Harry has pleaded not guilty to the charges. It would be inappropriate for the player or club to comment further while the legal process takes its course.”

A statement released by the Hellenic Police’s South Aegean region press office on Friday afternoon read: “Patrolling police officers in the area of Mykonos intervened and normalised a dispute between citizens.

“However, three foreigners involved in the incident turned against them, insulting and hitting a police officer with fists.

“The three foreigners were taken to the Mykonos Police Station, where upon their arrival they strongly resisted, pushing and beating three police officers.

“One of the detainees then tried to offer money so that the trial against them would not be completed. The arrested (men) were taken to the Syros Prosecutor’s Office.”

Manchester United are set to open their 2020/21 Premier League campaign against Crystal Palace on September 19 – having had their start delayed by a week due to their European involvement.
