Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon has been arrested and charged with fraud over a fundraising campaign to build a wall on the US-Mexico border.
Bannon and three co-defendants defrauded hundreds of thousands of donors in connection with the “We Build the Wall” campaign, which raised $25m (£19m), the US Department of Justice (DoJ) said.
The charges were contained in an indictment unsealed in Manhattan federal court.
In the indictment, Bannon promised that 100% of the money donated would be used for the project, but the defendants allegedly used hundreds of thousands of dollars in a manner for their own means.
Mr Bannon received more than $1m, at least some of which he used to cover personal expenses, the DoJ said.
Bannon is well-known as Trump’s former advisor and for questioning his former boss’ mental stability in Michael Wolff’s book ‘Fire And Fury: Inside The Trump White House.’
Bannon also claimed those close to the president described him as a “moron, an idiot”.
Bannon later expressed “regret” over his place in the book.
He will appear in court with his co-defendants.
