The officer identified as Officer Williams of the Greensboro Police Department in North Carolina, was fired after talking about the Floyd killing on Tik Tok.
Officer Williams said on the app that he was ‘disgusted by the things that happened in Minneapolis’, where Floyd died after one officer knelt on his neck during the arrest.
‘Guy on the ground, he’s laying on his stomach, he has handcuffs on. There’s four of y’all, one of him. Who has control of the situation?’
His views come after four Minneapolis officers stood by as one of the four knelt on George Floyd’s neck for 7 minutes during an arrest, resulting in his asphyxiation.
Derek Chauvin, Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane were all charged for their parts in the killing.
Williams said: “So, somebody’s saying ‘I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe’, you don’t think to yourself, ‘Oh my gosh, this guy can’t breathe, he might die’?”
Williams added that he became a police officer so he could ‘step up’ when others didn’t and so he could prevent wrong.
However, the Greensboro Police Department terminated his contract saying they claim that his social media videos is a violation of department policy.
Williams was first suspended whilst an investigation was conducted and then was ultimately fired.
Millions have taken to social media to condemn the firing with one Twitter user saying: I can’t believe they fired Officer Williams a black officer who went viral on TikTok for speaking out against George Flloyds murderer yet Breonna Taylor’s killers are still free and vacationing. And y’all wanna tell my systematic racism ain’t real??
One TikTok user wrote:
‘This is what happens to legitimately good cops. They keep saying they exist then the fire them. I am so proud of you (Williams).’
Williams’ family have sought compensation.
