A 17-year-old is dead and an off-duty police officer is fighting for her life after at least 21 other people were shot when a dispute broke out early Sunday at a ‘block’ party that was attended by hundreds of people in Southeast Washington, USA.
D.C. police said at least three shooters opened fire from different locations at the gathering in the 3300 block of Dubois Place, in the city’s Greenway neighbourhood, at about 12:30 a.m. Victims scattered over several blocks, creating a sprawling crime scene. Police found about 170 bullet casings in the vicinity, all were taken away for forensic tests.
At least 21 others were injured in the mass shooting, 11 of whom are women. At least seven of those hurt were taken to hospital in a critical condition. No arrests have so far been made as of Sunday morning and no further details have been offered by D.C. Police.
Witnesses told the police that the shooting occurred during a block party or cook-out that was taking place in the middle of the residential street late last night, with hundreds of people attending. Many said the gunfire sounded as if it was being fired from an automatic weapon or more than one gun.
An investigation has been launched by homicide detectives.
