Over 60 dead and 3000 wounded in Beirut blast - Hezbollah possibly to blame

The blast shattered windows and sent thick smoke billowing from the city center after explosion in city’s port.

Videos circulating on social media show the horrifying blast that has killed dozens of people and injured thousands.

The cause of the explosion is unclear with people saying the building which exploded was a fireworks factory whulst other sources say it was munitions.

Abbas Ibrahim, chief of Lebanese General Security, said the explosion might have been caused by highly explosive material that was confiscated from a ship some time ago and stored at the port.

The Lebanese Red Cross have said over 30 teams are currently on the situation.

Sources in the city say the hospitals are at breaking point with people being treated in the streets as no roomon the wards.

The Lebanese Health Minister, Hamad Hasan, said over 60 people have been confirmed killed and over 3000 have been wounded.

Witness Marwan Ramadan was about 550 yards from the port and was knocked off his feet by the force of the explosion.

“It was a real horror show. I haven’t seen anything like that since the days of the (civil) war.”

Witnesses reported seeing a strange orange-colored cloud over the site after the explosion.

Orange clouds of toxic nitrogen dioxide gas often accompany an explosion involving nitrates.

A local television channel in Lebanon said the material which exploded was sodium nitrate.

Hezbollah are now in the limelight as possible conductors.

The explosion happened just days before a United Nations tribunal is expected to issue its verdict on four alleged Hezbollah members accused of killing former Lebanon Prime Minister Rafic Hariri in a 2005 car bombing.
