The explosion occurred this afternoon in the port area of Lebanon’s capital Beirut.
Videos circulating online show a mushroom cloud-shaped plume of smoke rising high above the buildings.
The aftershock was so violent it blew out house and car windows and could be felt at least 13 miles away in the surrounding mountains.
Local media caught images and videos of people lying bloodied under cars and in rubble.
‘Buildings are shaking,’ tweeted one resident, while another wrote: ‘An enormous, deafening explosion just engulfed Beirut. Heard it from miles away’.
The cause of the explosion hasn’t been confirmed yet but Lebanon security officials believe that the blast was due to fireworks stored in Beirut port.
The number of deaths and casualties haven’t been confirmed yet.
