West London rivals Brentford and Fulham contest the Sky Bet Championship play-off final tonight (7.45pm) with both teams eyeing up the riches of the Premier League. Brentford are aiming to be the 50th team to play in the Premier League.
The Bees finished third in the Championship and disposed of Swansea in the play off semi finals by outclassing the Welsh Outfit in the second leg in the final ever game at Griffin Park. Fulham who finished in fourth place narrowly overcame Cardiff City over the two legged semi final.
Both teams have earned plaudits for their style of play this season and tonight’s final will be one for the football purist.
Fulham are hopeful that their 26 goal top scorer Alexander Mitrovic will be available after he missed both legs of the semi finals whilst Brentford will be hoping that their much coverted front three affectionately nicknamed BMW (Benrahma, Mbeumo and Watkins) will help them motor into the premier league.
According to Deloitte, victory for the Bees would be worth about £160m over three years, while a Fulham win would earn them £135m.
Brentford who had played at Griffin Park for 116 years will be hoping to kick off in their new Community Stadium as a premier league team whilst Fulham are hoping to bounce back to the top flight after being relegated last season. History does not favour the Bees who if they fail to win, will have taken part in more unsuccessful play-off campaigns in the English Football League than any other club, with this their ninth attempt. Fulham’s most recent play off campaign saw them defeat Aston Villa at Wembley in 2018 thanks to a goal from their skipper Tom Cairney.
