The UK Governments decision to apply a 14 day quarantine on all travelers arriving from Spain has outraged Spain’s PM, Pedro Sanchez.
Speaking on Spain’s Telecinco channel he said this latest decision was “UNJUST, and tourists in most Spanish regions would be safer from coronavirus than in the UK, and hopes Britain will rethink its decision. Talks will be ongoing after the UK also advised against all but essential travel to the whole of Spain”
TUI and Jet2 have already announced cancellations after the announcement. Easyjet will announce cancellations over the next few weeks. RyanAir and British Airways however have said they will continue to operate all flights as normal.
In addition, even the Balearic and Canary Islands travel advice from the Foreign Office is to “avoid non-essential journeys”
Editor of Which? Travel, Rory Boland was quoted as saying: “Hundreds of thousands of UK holidaymakers in Spain or about to fly are utterly confused regards this UK error”
Many travel agents do not understand the UK government’s advice. Because the islands have lower coronavirus infection rates.
Even Labour have said “The government’s handling of the restrictions have been chaotic”
Labour MP Chris Bryant said “Why the Canaries – which are further away from Barcelona than Barcelona is the UK – are on the list as well as mainland Spain. I simply don’t understand. There are many, many regions of Spain which have much lower infection rates than many areas in the UK. I think this has been terribly badly handled”
However with Boris Johnsons official spokesman warning “no travel is risk-free during this pandemic” It appears the Government will NOT be backtracking on this latest decision.
